VESTIBULAR TESTS

The vestibular examination is a diagnostic assessment that evaluates and diagnoses the function of the balance organ located in the inner ear.

The vestibular examination is useful for confirming and diagnosing any disorders that may affect the balance system, which is composed of:

  • labyrinth (located in the inner ear);
  • vestibular nerve;
  • central vestibular pathways;
  • vestibular apparatus consisting of the three semicircular canals (superior, posterior, superior, and lateral), the saccule, and the utricle.

It is advisable to further examine the clinical situation of the patient in cases where these tests yield unclear results. These are tests performed by a specialist doctor in Otorhinolaryngology:

  • “bed side” examination: the so-called “bedside” evaluation is a non-instrumental diagnosis in Otoneurology. It consists of a series of physical maneuvers performed by an experienced doctor on the patient, allowing for an accurate diagnosis of vertigo even in the acute phase;
  • v-HIT (video-Head Impulse Test): The v-HIT is a painless instrumental test aimed at studying the vestibulo-ocular motor reflex and its disorders. The test allows for the identification of the laterality of the vestibular disorder (right or left);
  • c-VEMPs (cervical-Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials): The c-VEMPs and o-VEMPs, or “cervical Vestibular Evoked Myogenic Potentials”, are a neuro-physiological evaluation used in the study and diagnosis of the function of the otolithic organs. The research of c-VEMPs and o-VEMPs constitutes a non-invasive and painless method for studying otolithic function and the functional integrity of the vestibular nerve;
  • f-HIT (functional-Head Impulse Test): is a novelty we offer at the Vestibular. The f-HIT is a new device that allows for the examination of the angular vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) function by evaluating the ability to focus on an image during passive and rapid head movements, performed with different accelerations.

Patient Preparation

The patient may be required to undergo additional instrumental examinations: computed tomography – CT, magnetic resonance imaging, etc.
