POLYSOMNOGRAPHY

The polysomnography, also known as sleep analysis, is a diagnostic test performed during sleep to evaluate sleep, its structure, and quality. By applying electrodes and sensors, numerous physiological parameters can be measured and the evolution of sleep cycles can be tracked, such as:

  • brain activity (brain waves);
  • oxygen levels in the blood;
  • breathing (breathing rate);
  • snoring.

The polysomnography is indicated when an individual suffers or is suspected to suffer from sleep disorders. The most frequent symptoms perceived by the patient are related to obstructive sleep apnea:

  • intermittent snoring;
  • night awakenings, often following apnea episodes, which affect sleep quality;
  • daytime sleepiness;
  • morning headache;
  • restless sleep.

During theinvestigation it is possible to detect the presence of:

  • obstructive sleep apnea;
  • nocturnal epilepsy;
  • non-REM sleep parasomnias (sleepwalking);
  • REM sleep behavior disorders;
  • restless legs syndrome;
  • insomnia.

Patient Preparation

It is highly recommended that the patient brings all routine tests performed at the request of their primary care physician (blood test, urine test, etc.) and a note of any medications taken daily or recently.

To undergo the polysomnography test, the patient is asked to eat moderately during lunch and dinner and avoid certain foods/beverages that may alter the test results (alcohol, caffeine, caffeinated beverages).
