Hypertrophy of the turbinates<\/b> refers to a condition characterized by an increase in the size of the nasal mucosa<\/b> covering the turbinates, the bony structures<\/b> present inside the nasal cavities, whose swelling<\/b> causes nasal obstruction <\/b>with a sensation of a blocked nose<\/b>.<\/p>\n
Their function in normal nasal physiology consists<\/span> of conditioning<\/span><\/b> (<\/span>humidification<\/span>, heating, and purification<\/span>) the air<\/span><\/b> we breathe<\/span><\/b> to improve gas exchanges<\/span>.<\/p>\n Generally, there are three turbinates<\/b> per nasal cavity: inferior,<\/b> middle<\/b>, and superior<\/b>; in some individuals, there is a fourth turbinate, the supreme<\/b>. The turbinates that most affect the airflow<\/b> are the inferior and middle ones. Some individuals present an increase in their volume<\/b> (hypertrophy of the turbinates) which prevents normal <\/span>nasal breathing<\/b><\/span>; the patient, in this case, reports <\/span>unilateral nasal obstruction<\/b><\/span> or <\/span>bilateral <\/b><\/span>with mouth breathing <\/span>open<\/b><\/span>, resulting in <\/span>dryness<\/b><\/span> of the throat, <\/span>runny nose<\/b><\/span> and possible <\/span>nighttime snoring<\/b><\/span> (it should be noted that snoring could have other different causes).<\/span><\/p>\n Among the main causes of hypertrophy of the turbinates<\/b> are:<\/p>\n THERAPY<\/b><\/p>\n After a careful clinical evaluation<\/strong> of the patient and having identified the causes of the reported disturbances, it is possible to treat the hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates<\/strong> by reducing their size. Various surgical techniques have been used for the reduction of the inferior turbinates:<\/b> <\/p>\n At the Gruppo Otologico<\/b>, for some years now, the Vesalius Quantum<\/b> (molecular quantum resonance scalpel) has been in use, which aims to create submucosal decongestion through tunnels made inside the turbinate, in such a way as to create a retraction of the mucosa<\/b> itself, leaving it intact externally, with the goal of increasing the respiratory space<\/b>. The procedure is performed on a day hospital<\/b> basis under local anesthesia (contact anesthesia with possible infiltration of the turbinate itself), in the operating room to ensure continuous monitoring of vital parameters<\/b> and with the assistance of the anesthesiologist<\/b>. It is absolutely not necessary to perform any nasal packing<\/b> post-operatively, the duration of the treatment is a few minutes<\/b> and the patient can return to their activities as soon as possible.
